Voxel Project

A voxel sandbox built from scratch in Unity.
Any suggestions are appreciated :)

Voxel Project is a Minecraft-inspired voxel sandbox focused on building, exploration, survival, and a fully procedural world.

The entire world is made from individual blocks that can be mined, placed, broken, and used to create structures and machines. Underneath the simple block-based appearance is a custom voxel system designed around procedural terrain generation, chunk-based rendering, dynamic lighting, persistent world data, and a growing collection of survival and building mechanics.

🌍 Explore a Procedurally Generated World

Every world is generated from scratch.

Terrain isn't just a flat noise map. The world is built from multiple layers of procedural generation to create different landscapes, elevations, underground areas, and biomes.

Explore:

  • Forests and dense forests
  • Plains and grassy areas
  • Sandy and desert-like regions
  • Hills and elevated terrain
  • Lakes and bodies of water
  • Caves and underground spaces
  • Natural tunnels and passages
  • Large underground areas to explore
  • Different terrain elevations and biome transitions

The underground isn't simply the terrain with a few holes cut into it. Caves and tunnels are generated separately to create spaces that can actually be explored, with darker underground environments and resources hidden beneath the surface.

The world can continue generating as you travel, allowing exploration far beyond the area where you first spawn.

⛏️ Mine, Build, and Change the World

Almost everything begins with the blocks around you.

Break blocks to collect resources, then use those resources to craft better equipment, build structures, and progress through the world.

Mining includes block breaking progression rather than instantly removing every block. Blocks have different durability/hardness values, and breaking them visually progresses through cracking stages.

You can:

  • Mine blocks
  • Place blocks
  • Collect resources
  • Build structures
  • Dig underground
  • Create tunnels
  • Build houses and bases
  • Create large-scale constructions
  • Reshape the terrain around you

Water is also simulated as part of the voxel world, allowing it to exist and interact with the environment rather than simply being a decorative texture.

πŸͺ΅ Progress From Basic Tools to Advanced Equipment

Start with basic materials and work your way toward stronger equipment.

The project includes multiple tiers of tools and weapons, including:

  • Wooden tools
  • Stone tools
  • Iron tools
  • Gold tools
  • Diamond tools
  • Swords
  • Shears

Different materials have different tool strengths and durability, giving progression a purpose beyond simply collecting more blocks.

Crafting recipes allow resources gathered early in the game to turn into equipment that makes later parts of the world easier to explore and work with.

🧰 Crafting, Furnaces, and Storage

Resources aren't only used for tools.

The world includes systems for turning raw materials into useful items and equipment.

Build and use:

  • Crafting tables
  • Furnaces
  • Chests and storage
  • Tools and weapons
  • Doors
  • Utility blocks
  • Redstone-style components

Furnaces have their own storage and state, including separate areas for inputs, fuel, and outputs. Furnace data is also saved with the world so your machines don't simply reset when you leave.

πŸ”΄ Build Contraptions

Voxel Project includes the beginnings of a redstone-style mechanical system.

Use components such as:

  • Redstone dust
  • Repeaters
  • Buttons
  • Signal gates
  • Other signal-based components

These systems can be combined to create your own mechanisms and contraptions.

The goal isn't just to build pretty structures — the world can eventually become something you engineer.

Create things like:

  • Automatic mechanisms
  • Hidden switches
  • Combination locks
  • Secret entrances
  • Signal-controlled doors
  • Logic-based contraptions

There is room for systems to interact in ways that aren't immediately obvious, encouraging experimentation and discovery.

🌱 Survival

Voxel Project has a survival system built around exploration and resource management.

Keep yourself alive while exploring the world and going underground.

Survival currently includes systems for:

  • Health
  • Hunger
  • Experience
  • Respawning
  • Inventory management
  • Resource gathering
  • Tool progression
  • Environmental exploration

There is also a Creative mode for players who don't want to worry about survival and simply want to build.

πŸ„ A Living World

The world isn't completely empty.

Passive creatures can appear in groups, while hostile creatures can spawn in sufficiently dark areas.

Lighting therefore isn't just visual — it can affect the gameplay and safety of an area.

A brightly lit base can become a safe place to return to, while unexplored caves and dark underground areas can become considerably more dangerous.

πŸ”₯ Fire and Other World Systems

The world contains systems that make the environment more than static blocks.

Fire can spread and update over time, and tools such as flint and steel can be used to start fires.

Combined with water, lighting, mobs, redstone-style mechanics, and destructible terrain, these systems are intended to make the world feel interconnected rather than being a collection of isolated features.

πŸ›οΈ Build a Home and Make It Yours

You aren't limited to surviving temporarily.

Build a permanent base, create storage rooms, set up crafting and smelting areas, and establish a place to return to after exploring.

Doors, beds, chests, furnaces, decorative blocks, and other utility blocks give you the tools to turn an empty patch of terrain into an actual home.

Beds can also act as respawn points, giving exploration a sense of progression and making distant areas easier to establish yourself in.

πŸ’Ύ Persistent Worlds

Your world is meant to persist.

Changes you make to the terrain aren't supposed to disappear when you close the game.

World data includes things such as:

  • Modified blocks
  • Player progress
  • Inventory
  • World state
  • Respawn information
  • Furnace data
  • Other persistent world systems

The idea is that the world you create becomes your world, rather than a temporary generated map.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Multiple World Types

Voxel Project isn't restricted to one type of map.

You can generate different environments depending on what you want to do.

Procedural World

The main survival experience.

Explore a procedurally generated world containing different terrain, biomes, caves, underground areas, water, resources, and creatures.

Flat World

A flat environment designed primarily for building and experimentation.

Useful when you want to test large structures without having to terraform an entire landscape first.

Debug Grid

A specialized environment for testing voxel systems and development.

Useful for checking blocks, mechanics, rendering, lighting, and
